It is where pehlwans are made, where technique is tested against grip and grit, and where generations of wrestlers have learned the sport from their gurus. But walk into a growing number of federation-registered akharas today, and you will find something different underfoot: a padded competition mat.

The change is not cosmetic. Mat wrestling changes how a bout is scored, how injuries are managed, and how quickly an akhara-trained pehlwan can transition into international freestyle competition. For a federation increasingly focused on producing wrestlers who can compete on the world stage, that transition matters.

Why the mat is winning ground

Coaches point to three practical reasons for the shift. First, mats are far more consistent than clay, which changes texture with humidity, rainfall and how recently it has been turned. Second, mat surfaces meet the standard required for regional and international qualifying events, meaning wrestlers don’t have to relearn balance and footwork the week before a tournament. Third — and most controversially — mats are seen as safer, reducing the friction-burn injuries and joint strain associated with repeated clay training.

“The clay taught me humility before it taught me technique. But if we want our boys fighting in Paris and Los Angeles, they need mat hours, not just mitti hours.” — a senior coach at a Punjab-region akhara

What traditionalists are not ready to give up

Not everyone is convinced the mat should replace the pit entirely. Older pehlwans argue that clay builds a kind of full-body strength and grounded stance that mat wrestling simply doesn’t demand in the same way — the resistance of oiled earth forces a wrestler to generate power from the hips and legs rather than relying on surface grip.

Most akharas affiliated with the federation have settled on a hybrid model: foundational years spent in the pit to build strength and traditional technique, followed by a transition to mat training once a wrestler is being groomed for competitive entries. It is, coaches say, the best of both traditions — and likely the shape of desi kushti’s next generation.

A quiet shift is underway in village akharas — clay pits are giving way to padded mats, and pehlwans are split on what it means for the sport.

[3

post-103","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
