For most of desi kushti’s history, the akhara was a male-only space, bound by traditions that discouraged \u2014 and in many places explicitly barred \u2014 women from training in the pit. That is changing, unevenly but unmistakably, across federation-registered clubs.<\/p>\n
In the last few years, several akharas have begun accepting girls into junior training groups, often starting with separate morning sessions before integrating into mixed technique classes. The wrestlers who came through these early programmes are now old enough to compete \u2014 and several have already medalled at provincial-level dangals traditionally dominated by men’s categories.<\/p>\n

What’s driving the change<\/h2>\n
Federation officials point to international wrestling’s women’s freestyle categories \u2014 where results are tracked, funded and celebrated at the same level as men’s competition \u2014 as a major pull factor. Parents who once saw wrestling as a dead-end for daughters now see a genuine competitive pathway, including scholarship and selection opportunities that didn’t exist a decade ago.<\/p>\n
The work still ahead<\/h2>\n
Access remains uneven. Many rural akharas still have no facilities, coaching staff or cultural appetite for training women, and the wrestlers who do break through are disproportionately from clubs in larger towns. Federation development staff say closing that gap is now a formal priority \u2014 not just for fairness, but because the talent pool it unlocks is, by their own estimate, roughly half the population they have barely tapped.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
